Your Rival's Strategy

Before I can help you, choose the pokémon you started your game with:

Click here if you chose Charmander
Click here if you chose Squirtle

If you forgot the pokémon you started your game with, think for a second. Do you have an Ivysaur or Venusaur? If yes, you started your game with a Bulbasaur.

If you have a Wartortle or Blastoise, you started your game with a Squirtle.

If you have a Charmeleon or Charizard, you started your game with Charmander.

At the beginning of the game, you remember that you chose the plant pokémon, right?

Well, you also remember that your rival(Let's call him Gary from now on) chose Charmander. As soon as you started to leave, Gary and his Charmander challenged you to a pokémon match.

He started being your rival ever since you chose Bulbasaur. Don't worry, if you chose Charmander, he would have chosen it's weakness, Squirtle, and if you had chosen Squirtle, he would have chosen Squirtle's weakness, Bulbasaur.

The point is, the game makes him as tough as possible. Don't feel bad if he beats you at any time.

His trick is strategy. After he battles you in Prof. Oak's lab, you notice he's added a bird pokémon to his collection. Next, a psychic type. After that, a normal type. Then a water type. He's gathering pokémon from the six main types so he can win! You must use his strategy.

Let's think. Since you chose Bulbasaur, Gary tried to beat you by choosing it's weakness. By choosing a fire pokémon, he has advantage against bug, ice, and grass types.

Next time you see him, he's captured a Pidgey(Flying type). Now he can defeat bug, grass, ice, and fighting pokémon.

After that, he adds to his team a Raticate(Normal) and Abra(Psychic). He can defeat bug, grass, ice, fighting, rock, and poison types.

Later, he captures a Gyarados(Water and Flying), and an Exeggcute(Plant). He can defeat poison, bug, grass, ice, fighting, rock, ground, dragon, electric and fire types.

See? The point is, as he adds different types of pokémon to his team, he's able to beat more types. So, you might want to use his technique against him. Capture a fire, electric, water, and plant type to defeat him!

He always sends out his flying type first, so send out something that beats flying types first.

Following that, he sends out a psychic type. This type may be toughest one you encounter throughout the entire game! Try sending out a pokémon that is good against psychic types.

Next, he sends out Raticate or Rhydon, depending on far in the game you are. Near the end, he sends out Rhydon. But when you battle him on the S.S. Anne and Cerulean City, send out a rock pokémon. When trying to defeat his rock pokémon, send out something that beats ground and rock types.

Following that, his plant pokémon. Send out a pokémon that has an advantage over this type.

Next, he sends out his Gyarados. Gyarados is not as tough as it seems; It's extremely weak to a powerful electric or dragon attack.

Then, his fire type. His Charmander, Charmeleon, or Charizard is the pokémon with the highest level, so don't be suprised if it is the one that usually knocks out your team.

A good team could be a Pikachu(Good against bird and water types and gyarados), Butterfree(Good against psychic, bug, and plant types), Bulbasaur(Good against water, ground, and rock types), Rapidash(Good against plant, bug, and ice types), and Vaporeon(Good against fire, ground, and rock types.). But don't stick to this team! The possibilities are endless!

You remember that you chose Squirtle, the water pokémon. After that, your Rival spotted Squirtle's weakness; Bulbasaur. So he chose that pokémon. When you about to leave Prof. Oak's lab, your Rival immediantly challenged you to a battle.

Ever since, your Rival(Let's call him Gary) challenged you whenever he got the chance. It's not suprising that he won. He uses a team that uses various types of pokémon, so it would be impossible for his opponet to beat all of them with a single pokémon.

The first pokémon battle you ever had was a fast one. He thought his Bulbasaur was stronger then your Squirtle. When you were exploring Viridian City, you may have noticed his new bird pokémon.

At Cerulean city, he adds a normal type and a psychic type. Nothing changes on the S.S. Anne.

But at the battle in Lavender town, he's battling with a new plant and fire type. I'll walk you through all of the advantages his team has as builds it.

Bulbasaur(Plant and Poison type)= Good against plant, water, electric, ground, bug, and rock types.

Bulbasaur(Plant and Poison type) and Pidgey(Bird and Normal type)= Good against plant, water, electric, ground, bug, fighting, and rock types.

Bulbasaur(Plant and Poison type), Rattata(Normal), Abra(Psychic), and Pidgeotto(Bird and Normal type)= Good against plant, water, electric, ground, bug, fighting, poison, and rock types.

Ivysaur(Plant and Poison type), Raticate(Normal), Kadabra(Psychic), and Pidgeotto(Bird and Normal type)= Good against plant, water, electric, ground, bug, fighting, poison, and rock types.

Venusaur(Plant and Poison type), Arcanine(Fire), Gyarados(Water and Flying) Rhydon(Ground and Rock), Alakazam(Psychic), and Pidgeot(Bird and Normal type)= Good against plant, water, electric, ground, bug, fighting, poison, ice, fire, normal, flying, and rock types.

See what happens as he adds different types of pokémon to his team? His strengths increase! Use this same technique against him!

So this means you might want to add different elements of pokémon to your team, too. A Jolteon(Beats his Gyarados and Pidgeot with a good electric attack, and can use Pineedle to beat the Alakazam), a Flareon(Beats his Venusaur), a Squirtle(Beats his Arcanine), and a Beedrill(Can beat the Alakazam with Pineedle and Twineedle attack.) Don't stop there! The possibilities are endless! Good luck!

Yes, you remember it, how your rival always beat you no matter what.Ever since he chose that water pokémon, Squirtle, he tried to find the Achille's heel for all of the pokémon you captured. I'll show you how he did this, by giving you a walkthrough of his strengths as he builds his team;

Squirtle=Fire, ground, and rock types.

Squirtle and Pidgey=Fire, ground, rock, fighting, bug, and grass types.

Squirtle, Pidgeotto, Rattata, and Abra= Fire, ground, rock, fighting, bug, grass, and poison types.

Wartortle, Pidgeotto, Raticate, and Kadabra=Fire, ground, rock, fighting, bug, grass, and poison types.

Wartortle, Pidgeotto, Kadabra, Exeggcute, Growlithe, and Gyarados=Fire, ground, rock, fighting, bug, grass, electric, dragon, ice, water, and poison types.

Blastoise, Pidgeot, Alakazam, Exeggutor, Arcanine, and GyaradosFire, ground, rock, fighting, bug, grass, electric, dragon, ice, water, and poison types.

See? His team grows stronger as he adds different types to it! That's his secret! Use it against him by battling with a team that uses a variety of types that his pokémon are weak against!

One example would be an Electabuzz(Beats his Gyarados, Pidgeot, and Blastiose), Omaster(Beats his Arcanine, Pidgeot, and maybe Gyarados), Rapidash(Beats his Exeggutor), and Beedrill(Beats his Alakazam)! Think! This isn't the only team, this is just one! Good luck!!
